Programme Manager – Plastics

We are looking for an experienced Programme Manager to work on the development of policy and standards to address plastic pollution. The role will focus on advocating for an absolute reduction of our plastic footprint in key sectors such as packaging, electronics, cars and textiles through public facing campaigns and contributions to technical discussions. You will use your campaigning and negotiation skills to help mainstream reusable packaging, fight greenwashing in the plastics sector, remove substances of concern from plastics, and reduce microplastics emissions.

About ECOS: ECOS is an international NGO with a network of members and experts advocating for environmentally friendly technical standards, policies and laws. We ensure the environmental voice is heard when they are developed and drive change by providing expertise to policymakers and industry players, leading to the implementation of strong environmental principles. ECOS is headquartered in Brussels and has an exceptional team of 30 staff supported by a network of over 50 technical experts and more than 50-member organisations.   

Your main tasks will be to:

  • Promote environmental interests in the proposal, development and revision of international and European policies and standards to address plastic pollution and help mainstream reusable packaging, fight greenwashing in the plastics sector, remove substances of concern from plastics, and reduce microplastics emissions.
  • Produce impactful materials and strategies in response to targets and opportunities stemming from policy and standardisation
  • Coordinate several projects, activities, but also team members and technical experts to support our work and impact in this sector
  • Drive ECOS engagement in two influential alliances and campaigns, i.e. the Rethink Plastic alliance as well as the global Break Free From Plastic movement
  • Represent ECOS in relevant meetings, such as meetings of standardisation organisations or European institutions, UN fora, and workshops, conferences and other platforms
  • Engage and collaborate with our members, other NGOs and relevant stakeholders
  • Prepare funding applications and ensure proper reporting to funders

Skills and experience required:

  • University degree in environmental sciences, social sciences, or relevant discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience on environment-related topics
  • Familiarity with plastics-related policies at EU and/or international level
  • Experience in developing & implementing strategies to achieve change, ideally through coalitions or campaigns
  • Commitment to the values, vision and mission of environmental NGOs
  • Strong analytical skills & ability to translate technical information into digestible information
  • Excellent time and project management skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent writing, communication, networking and negotiation skills
  • Fluent English, other languages an asset

  • An open-ended Belgian contract with a competitive salary package between €3.200 - €4.130 according to the ECOS salary scale and depending on skills and relevant experience of the candidate
